Fellowship Program
Program Experience
The program consists of 24 months of clinical training and 12 months of laboratory or clinical research. It is also possible to incorporate some research activities during the “clinical” months. Selected trainees may be offered a fourth year to pursue further research in their area of interest with an appointment.
During the training in Medical Oncology, emphasis is placed upon outpatient activities, which consist of rotations through the different multidisciplinary (gastrointestinal, genitourinary, gynecologic, head and neck/thoracic, and breast), and rotations on the oncology consultation service and the general oncology service of the John D. Dingell Veteran’s Association Hospital.
During the Hematology segment, training occurs in both the inpatient and outpatient setting for each service.
Fellows will rotate through the following services:
- Stem cell transplantation
- Leukemia/lymphoma
- Red cell disorders and hemostasis
- Apheresis
- Inpatient Consultation services at Harper University Hospital and Detroit Receiving Hospital

Fellows are trained in the performance of: bone marrow aspirates/biopsies, intratheral administration of chemotherapy, apheresis, and chemotherapy administration.
The fellow, under the supervision of the attending staff, directs the care of the patient by the housestaff.
Fellows will also spend time in laboratory-based activities including:
- Hematopathology
- Hemostasis laboratory
- Hospital transfusion service.
